Lake Michigan Walleye Fishing
Lake Michigan is one of the best places to go in the Midwest if you want to go walleye fishing. This lake is the perfect habitat for walleye because it offers many structures for them to thrive and grow. This lake is bordered by four separate states. They are Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. Therefore, when you fish for walleye in this lake you need to be familiar with the regulations set in place by each of these states. The rules for fishing may vary with each state because each of them control and set in place their own regulations and you wouldn’t want to break any laws.
Lake Michigan ranks as the sixth largest lake found anywhere in the world and out of the Great Lakes it comes in as the third largest. Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes that is entirely located within the boarders of the United States. It is 580 feet above sea level, 307 miles long, 118 miles wide and covers a surface area of 22,300 square miles. So now you can see why it is one of the largest lakes in the world.
Best Fishing Location and Bait to Use
The walleye will try to eat anything that it can get into its mouth but they do prefer smaller fish. They will also eat worms, crustaceans and insects. The best time to go fishing for walleye will be from late evening to early morning if you are after the larger trophy size fish. The walleye in Lake Michigan start their spawning season in the spring and they will usually begin migrating into the feeder streams during this time. However, this may not always be possible so the walleye that do not make it to these streams will seek out shoals, weeds and shallow bars for spawning.
A good place to fish for walleye in the early spring will be around the mouth of the Tacoosh, Days, Whitefish and Escanaba rivers where they begin flowing into the Little Bay de Noc. Shad Raps are recommended as bait during this time as they seem to produces some positive results. Crawler harnesses, small jigs, plastic worms, crankbaits and spoons work excellent for the walleye in this lake as well.
When fishing in the summer months the walleye will move out into the deeper water during the day. For this reason during the mornings and late evenings you should fish the shallow to medium deep waters for the best results.
In the winter months you will find that spoons, plastic worms and jigs still work well but you have to keep in mind that the walleye are less active when the water is cold. Make sure you move your bait in a slow manner to give the fish time to take the bait or they will simply ignore it.
Techniques for Catching Walleye in Lake Michigan
The technique that you use will mostly depend on when and where you go walleye fishing. Different seasons and times will affect how the walleye respond to your bait. During spawning season the walleye are the most aggressive and will be attracted to most any type of bait. The male walleye stay mostly in the shallow water and the spawning area but the females will venture out into the deeper water during the daytime hours.

Hemingway on Fishing $16.99 From childhood on, Ernest Hemingway was a passionate fisherman. He fished the lakes and creeks near the family’s summer home at Walloon Lake, Michigan, and his first stories and reportages were often about his favorite sport. Here, collected for the first time in one volume, are all of his great writings about the many kinds of fishing he did — from trout in the rivers of northern Michigan to marlin in the Gulf Stream. In A Moveable Feast, Hemingway speaks of sitting in a café in Paris and writing about what he knew best — and when it came time to stop, he "did not want to leave the river." The story was the unforgettable classic, "Big Two-Hearted River," and from its first words we do not want to leave the river either. He also wrote articles for the Toronto Star on fishing in Canada and Europe and, later, articles for Esquire about his growing passion for big-game fishing. His last books, The Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream, celebrate his vast knowledge of the ocean and his affection for its great denizens. Hemingway on Fishing is an encompassing, diverse, and fascinating collection. From the early Nick Adams stories and the memorable chapters on fishing the Irati River in The Sun Also Rises to such late novels as Islands in the Stream, this collection traces the evolution of a great writer’s passion; the range of his interests; the sure use he made of fishing, transforming it into the stuff of great literature. Anglers and lovers of great writing alike will welcome this important collection. |

3D Captain Dan – Ft Lauderdale FL, Waterproof Dive Site Card $9.95 The Hollyhock was a 175-foot U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender built in March of 1937in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1959, she was moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she was used as an ice breaker in Lake Michigan. She later served in Miami, Florida — also as a buoy tender — and in the Bahamas for refueling seaplanes for the U.S. Air Force. In 1982, the Hollyhock was decommissioned by the Coast Guard andwas later purchased by a missionary and renamed the Good News Mission Ship, where she went from port to port spreading the Gospel. She became stranded in the Miami River, and with the help of the Boating Improvement Program Fund and the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo, she was purchased to become an artificial reef. In February of 1990, the ship was renamed and reefed in memory of Captain Dan Garnsey, a well-known Pompano Beach drift fishing boat owner. Today, the ship lies upright in 110 feet with her bow pointing south. The wheelhouse is 70 feet below the surface and her deck is at 90 feet below the surface. The ship is intact and has been prepared with large access holes providing certified wreck divers easy opportunity for penetration. This unique card provides detailed depiction of Ancient Mariner Wreck. Each waterproof card is printed on both sides, made of durable PVC plastic and is designed to be taken on the dive. Theyare also 3-hole punched to fit in standard log books. |

Babar Comes to America $17.95 A vintage look at life in America, seen from the eyes of one of the world’s most famous elephants and freshly reissued for a new generation Originally published in 1965, Babar Comes to America is one of Laurent de Brunhoff’s most popular books, and it is in print again for the first time in many years. Babar, king of the elephants, receives an invitation to meet with the president of the United States—the perfect excuse for a family vacation! None of the elephants have been to America before, so Babar packs up his family and sets off to see the sights. From the hustle and bustle of New York to the wide open spaces of the Grand Canyon, from riding streetcars in San Francisco to fishing on Lake Michigan, Babar and his family experience America in all its glory and splendor. With Laurent de Brunhoff’s thoughtful observations and lovable characters, which have made Babar a household name since 1931, this nostalgic look at the USA more than thirty years ago will captivate young readers as they marvel at how much has changed, while adults will take a trip down memory lane and see sights, signs, and more that had been forgotten. |

Mixing local happenings with supernatural tales and creatively adapting traditional stories to suit changing audiences, the diverse inhabitants of the U.P. have created a wealth of lore populated with tricksters, outlaws, cunning trappers and poachers, eccentric bosses of the mines and lumber camps, “bloodstoppers” gifted with the lifesaving power to stop the flow of blood, “bearwalkers” able to assume the shape of bears, and more.            For folklorist Richard M. Dorson, who ventured into the region in the late 1940s, the U.P. was a living laboratory, a storyteller’s paradise. Bloodstoppers and Bearwalkers, based on his extensive fieldwork in the area, is his richest and most enduring work. This new edition, with a critical introduction and an appendix of additional tales selected by James P. Leary, restores and expands Dorson’s classic contribution to American folklore. Engaging and well informed, the book presents and ponders the folk narratives of the region’s loggers, miners, lake sailors, trappers, and townsfolk. Unfolding the variously peculiar and raucous tales of the U.P., Bloodstoppers and Bearwalkers reveals a vital component of Upper Midwest culture and a fascinating cross-section of American society.  |

Flies only: Early sport fishing conservation on Michigan’s Au Sable River. $69 This dissertation focuses on the earliest stage of fish conservation on the Au Sable River of Michigan. It begins with the popularization of the grayling fishery in the nation’s sporting journals, such as Forest and Stream and Scribner’s Monthly where Thad Norris and others wrote of the adventure and abundance of fly fishing on the Au Sable. By the 1890s the grayling were all but gone due in part to over fishing, commercial lumbering and the introduction of non-native brook trout. Despite the absence of the grayling, a sustainable sport fishing industry had risen from the ashes of the cut over lands of the Michigan High Plains. Early sport fishers had recognized man’s role in the loss of grayling and began their own versions of fish and stream conservation centered in the towns of Grayling and Lovells. Early fish conservation looked directly at protecting the resource itself, and not the modern holistic approach that encompasses the entire ecosystem. The first focus was to create state laws that closed seasons and promoted more sporting methods of capture such as the use of a hook and line. Then the state focused on the enforcement of laws with the game warden system. In Michigan, county game wardens, with full legal authority, could be hired by private citizens, clubs and special interest groups. This system pitted outside conservation agendas against a local reluctance to follow state laws. Another early fish conservation method was the hatchery system. Artificial fish propagation had been perfected in the US in the 1850s and was put to use to bolster fish populations against natural threats and fishing pressure. Privatization had been one of the most basic forms of conservation. Keeping anglers and hunters off the water and land certainly meant increased wildlife populations. Anglers along the South Branch strung barbed wire across the river, violating state law which stated that navigable rivers were held in the public domain. In 1907, fly fishing anglers |

From Poverty to Glory $15.03 New – It was the 1930s during the height of the Great Depression and Tom Sprague was just a child growing up in rural Michigan. It was a bittersweet time characterized by breadlines, record unemployment, the rise of fascist regimes, and homeless families. Most importantly, the family learned early that financial poverty could be turned into everlasting gold as long |

From Start to Finish $9.99 From Start to Finish is a five part autobiographical humorous account of George Brewer’s travels through life, from humble beginnings, through college and medical school, a four-year stint in a prison, ending with a career in medical research. Author Biography: Dr. George Brewer is a physician medical scientist and a Professor of Human Genetics and Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. This book is an autobiographical look at five stages of his life. It begins with humorous tales of “rural poor” life on a “farm” in post-depression America, and includes a boy’s perspective on hunting and fishing with his father. Experiences in college and medical school are told “up close and personal,” always with a view toward the humor in a situation. Most readers won’t believe what happened next, a four year stint in a maximum security prison where a mosquito colony was maintained, and thousands of inmates infected with malaria (all for a good cause!). The book ends with a “lay-person” look at a career in medical research, where the ending promises to be very good, perhaps with an effective treatment for advanced cancer. |

Grand Marais, Michigan (Images of America Series) $12.85 The village of Grand Marais, on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is one of the oldest inhabited places on the Great Lakes. Native Americans camped along its beautiful natural harbor, naming it Kitchi-bitobig, or “Great Pond.” The French voyageurs traded furs along these shores, and in the early 1860s, a trading post was established. The lumber boom soon followed, and by the mid-1890s, Grand Marais was a bustling town of 2,000 inhabitants. The good times did not last, and by 1911, the sawmills closed, the railroad pulled out, and almost overnight the population dwindled to a mere 200 or so. But Grand Marais refused to die, and those hardy individuals who stayed somehow found a way to make a living, many in the commercial and sport fishing industries. The opening of a state road into town brought vacationers to enjoy the many recreational delights of the area. Today Grand Marais is a popular tourist destination that still retains its small-town friendliness and historic atmosphere. |

Grosse Ile, Michigan (Images of America Series) $19.99 Grosse Ile Township today is made up of a dozen islands in the Detroit River. The largest island was given the name Grosse Ile by early French explorerswho found it being used by the Native American tribes as a fishing and hunting ground. In 1776, Detroit merchants William and Alexander Macomb purchased Grosse Ile from the Potawatomi Indians and, to help establish their ownership rights, built a home and a gristmill and secured tenant farmers to till the land. Later acreage was sold off and settlement began in earnest, although it remainedlargely an agricultural community. The railroad came to Grosse Ile in the 1880s and attracted both visitors and new residents. Hotels sprang up to accommodate summer visitors who were drawn to Grosse Ile by its healthful climate, natural beauty, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Today Grosse Ile is home to more than 11,000 residents who have come here to enjoy many of those same unique qualities–all in close proximity to a large metropolitan area. |

Hemingway on Fishing By Ernest Hemingway $15 From childhood on, Ernest Hemingway was a passionate fisherman. He fished the lakes and creeks near the family’s summer home at Walloon Lake, Michigan, and his first stories and reportages were often about his favorite sport.
