Wheel Clamping, Is It Such A Bad Thing?
In this time of economic distress it’s advisable to avoid any unnecessary fines, ranging from littering the streets to the illegal parking fines. This would come as common sense to most people, yet time and time again I hear of people reacting like spoilt children whenever they are caught with a clamp for being foolish and parking in a spot that they shouldn’t have, railing at the poor traffic wardens who are simply being professional about what they are paid to do. In fact, in the small town of Waterfoot in the UK , all traffic wardens have been banned from entering a fish and chip shop simply because of their profession. I’ve never understood the reason behind such discriminatory behaviour and thus, find myself strongly opposed to it, because deep down, I have an undying respect for the ticket issuers, the wheel clamp, and the car park managers who run them.
This respect stems from their undying enthusiasm for the job. It takes a truly strong person to keep working at something when it seems that the entire world hates you for it. Sometimes some of the calmest and best executed examples of wit I have ever seen comes from these people, as they smoothly shrug off insult after insult before hammering home the underlying truth that the motorist was in the wrong. The fact that the motorists are also wrong may also be one of the reasons I respect traffic wardens for, because when one person thinks that the rest of the world should bend to make life convenient for them, its good to see an enforcer of the rules slam them back into reality. We all love to see it happen to someone else, but even after witnessing the consequences some of us still risk parking where we please with the futile hope that the hazard warning lights will deter traffic wardens.
After looking into it a little, on privately owned car parks traffic wardens are hired and called out to the car park, meaning that their job is similar to that of a plumber, and yet plumbers are never demonised for doing a good job, quite the opposite in fact. Car Parks also do a fantastic job keeping the streets clear by keeping cars out of the way, and so I think that it’s about time that we stop viewing traffic wardens and wheel clamps with scorn and simply learn how to park our cars.
